BWI Airport & Then a Plane Enroute to YYZ, Sunday Afternoon

Part of the preparations for their trip had involved Watts being briefed on what was and was not allowed to be carried on to an airplane. As absurd as Watts found most of the rules, he did obviously abide by them, meaning their trip through the security line was uneventful, if somewhat tedious. Also, hey, the first real test of Watts's modern identity papers!

So, security, and then waiting at the gate- where Watts's attention had first been drawn by the wine bar but apparently there would not be enough time to sit and properly enjoy a glass before they had to board. What was possible, however, was a stop at some place called 'Auntie Anne's' which sold hot pretzels.

"Would you care for one?" Watts asked Steven as he tugged him towards the counter.

Watts patted himself down, and then grabbed the small bag- the carry-on- that held the essentials he hadn’t wanted to put in his checked bag. “Yes,” he declared. “All ready.”

Steven was smiling at Llewellyn again, distracted once more by being able to be there while Llewellyn had this new experience.

It was pretty delightful, wasn’t it, watching someone you love experience something new?

Watts reached for Steven’s hand to give it a brief squeeze before they headed to the line to board.

It truly was!

Steven fell into step beside him. "Would you like to go first? I'll be right behind you if there's any problems?"

Not that Steven anticipated any, but he knew what a comfort it could be to know you had someone there just in case.

“All right,” Watts nodded.

And indeed there were no problems, the flight attendant scanning his pass and checking his ID before nodding at him to proceed down the jetway.

"Cheers, thank you," Steven said to the attendant when they were done. But he'd have been effusive in his thanks even if Llewellyn wasn't with him. It was just Steven's way.

"Window seat for you?" Steven asked as they headed to the plane itself. "See the view better?"

“We can swap out if- if you’d like to see, at some point?” Watts checked. Or if the view of them being so high up made him nervous, as it had when they were on the Eye or some of Miss Beniko’s planetary tours.

Steven did have the memory of the London Eye in his thoughts, yes. So he had no problem saying, without calling attention to the potential concern, "Of course. Or if you want to see what it's like to be seated by the aisle. It's all a new experience, right?"

Watts had never considered himself uncomfortable with heights before, but then he had been accustomed to a world where building as high as ten stories was notable.

“Excellent,” Watts smiled at him. “What am I meant to do with this?” he asked, indicating the bag he’d brought.

"There'll be spaces for it by our seats," Steven said. "Just depends on if you want it close to hand or not."

“I’d prefer it,” Watts admitted, as he found the pair of seats assigned to them. “This is us, I believe?”

"This is us," Steven confirmed. He pointed. "You can tuck your bag there. It'll not knock about if there's turbulence but you can easily reach it if you need. Otherwise you'd put it in this space overhead, you see."

Watts tucked his bag away where Steven had indicated, and then settled into his seat, elbow knocking against something as he did so.

“Huh,” he said, after fumbling to catch what turned out to be a tiny bottle of water.

"See?" Steven said. "Snacks!"

Not that water itself was a snack, but it was an indication of refreshments to come.

“And a small television!” Watts observed, taking in everything around them. “How extravagant.”

Steven had been looking forward to Llewellyn's discovery of that. "There's music as well if you like. Sometimes games. Video games though."

Steven knew Llewellyn didn't care for video games as much as traditional board games, so he did want to temper expectations.

“Doesn’t that get- terribly noisy, if everyone is listening to something?” Watts wondered. He did know about headphones, of course, but they were one of those things he didn’t use often.

"You use headphones," Steven explained. "They'll provide some if you don't have any with you."

"I didn't think to bring any," Watts admitted. "But- I've you right beside me, seems a shame to forgo conversation with my favourite person when that's an option."

Steven bumped their shoulders together. "Don't mind talking with you either. But I'll understand if you want to try it out for the experience."

"Perhaps for a few minutes," Watts conceded.

"Entirely up to you," Steven assured him. "It's your first time. Don't want you feeling like you missed out on anything you wanted to try."

“Maybe so, but I don’t want to do so at the expense of ignoring you,” Watts said.

"I've flown before," Steven said, "So I've no needs here other than wanting to make sure you have as much of the experience as you care to. But it's kind of you to think of me."

“I need to make sure my traveling companion is also having a pleasant time,” Watts insisted.
