BWI Airport & Then a Plane Enroute to YYZ, Sunday Afternoon

Part of the preparations for their trip had involved Watts being briefed on what was and was not allowed to be carried on to an airplane. As absurd as Watts found most of the rules, he did obviously abide by them, meaning their trip through the security line was uneventful, if somewhat tedious. Also, hey, the first real test of Watts's modern identity papers!

So, security, and then waiting at the gate- where Watts's attention had first been drawn by the wine bar but apparently there would not be enough time to sit and properly enjoy a glass before they had to board. What was possible, however, was a stop at some place called 'Auntie Anne's' which sold hot pretzels.

"Would you care for one?" Watts asked Steven as he tugged him towards the counter.

"I see," Watts said with a nod.

"Oh!" his eyes went wide, a moment later. "We're moving!"

"It's going to get louder," Steven told him, so hopefully that wouldn't make Llewellyn nervous. "And there'll be some pressure when we take off. It won't hurt though."

"I appreciate the forewarning," Watts said gratefully, as the aeroplane began to pick up speed as it made its way down the runway. Watts's focus was on looking out the small window, and there was another "Oh!" as they started to lift into the air.

Steven put a hand on Llewellyn's arm just to give him something warm and solid to steady him if he needed. "Keep watching. It's wild when everything starts looking small."

"It's like looking down at a model," Watts agreed, as they continued their ascent. "You were not kidding about the pressure," he added, making a face.

"Doesn't it?" Steven said. "It's pretty at night as well, everything lit up. We should try doing a nighttime flight so you can see it sometime!"

"You would be willing to do all this again?" Watts asked. "For me?"

"There's very little I wouldn't do for you, Llewellyn Watts," Steven said, giving him a warm look. "Including taking another plane flight. Or dozens."

"I do love you so, Steven Grant," Watts declared.

[hasaknightjob]

"Lucky me," Steven said. He gave Llewellyn's arm a light squeeze with his hand, hoping that would be all right for a display of affection.

Well, Watts had just said I love you out loud- admittedly quietly enough that they were unlikely to be overheard, so the squeeze got a smile as Watts looked back over at Steven.

"I love you too," Steven whispered back. Not that he cared if they were overheard, but he wanted Llewellyn to be comfortable. Plus it was rude to talk loudly enough on a airplane that your fellow travelers could overhear you anyway.

The plane finished its ascent, finally, and Watts looked out the window again.

"Steven, Steven! We are up amongst the clouds! How fantastic is that?" Which, yes, he'd known was going to happen. But reading about it and experiencing it were two different things.

"Above some even," Steven said, reaching over him to point. "Don't they look pretty from this side? Entirely different shapes and all."

"Absolutely fascinating," Watts agreed, clearly still somewhat awestruck.

"Sunrises and sunsets can look very interesting up here as well," Steven said. He sat back so Llewellyn could have his space. "Perhaps if we do this again we should schedule something that starts near sunset, so you can see that and the lights of cities by the time we land."

"That sounds lovely."

Perhaps it was the fact that there was only a small window to look out of, or the fact that they were so high that it was harder to conceptualise, or... well, whatever the case, there was none of that unsettling feeling he'd had regarding being up so high on previous occasions.

"Doing all right so far?" Steven asked. "How are your ears?"

"They feel a bit- stuffed?" Watts frowned, trying to figure out how to describe it. "Like I've stuck a cotton ball in there."

Steven had expected as much. "It's the pressure. They need to pop. It'll help if you yawn, or open your mouth as though you're about to."

Steven opened his own mouth to demonstrate.

Watts followed suit, shaking his head when his ears finally did pop. "What a curious sensation."

"Bit strange, isn't it?" Steven agreed. He gave Llewellyn's arm a quick, gentle rub. "But see? You're managing it. Like an expert already."

"The whole process is fascinating," Watts admitted. "Certainly less convenient than a portal. And perhaps even a train for shorter distances, when you factor in all the time it takes before you even board the aeroplane." Not to mention going through customs once they reached the other side. "But fascinating," he repeated.

"Portals are new ones for us as well," Steven said. He glanced around but they weren't speaking loudly enough to be overheard. Also it wasn't as though portals were unheard of, just uncommon. "Normally only people with magic can make those here."

"Strange how accustomed we've become to being able to access those," Watts mused.
