Steven was making sure to take loads of pictures. Both because he'd promised Liz he would and because he wanted them for his own memories. "Bit bigger than back at the museum, isn't it? Have to have a banquet, if we were having a lunch to fit in here."

It’s a good thing one of them was making sure to take pictures, because Watts was far too enamored of the exhibits as a whole to remember to do so. They’d be walking along, and then he would stop, turn around, and backtrack in order to investigate something that caught his eye.

“That is actually what inspired me to look into whether they had an aquarium,” Watts admitted. And then it had turned out to be a world renowned aquarium!

It was possible some of the photos Steven took were of Llewellyn lost in thought as he studied the exhibits. Those were for Steven's own personal collection though. "Thought it might be. I like it. Don't let me forget to stop by the gift shop when we leave. We'll see if there's something for Liz, to thank her."

Liz had said she only wanted pictures but Steven still wanted to keep an eye out for an extra gift to show his appreciation for her taking care of his fish.

Look, this was only the second aquarium he’d ever seen in person! He took hold of Steven’s free hand with his own, threading their fingers together as they continued to walk (at least, until he had to stop and go back to look at something again). “Of course. We’ll find something good, I’m sure.”

Steven thrilled to see that Llewellyn was comfortable enough to hold hands with him. He tried not to make a fuss about it so that Llewellyn didn't feel self-conscious. "I know we've only just started but are you liking it so far?"

"Very much s- oh! Look at those!" and Watts was tugging them forward so they could get a closer look at a pair of fish he'd spotted.

Steven was as delighted by Llewellyn's enjoyment of the displays as he was in the displays themselves. He did manage to look away from Llewellyn and toward the fish eventually. "They are lovely. Wonder if they say the same about us?"

“I should hope they find us at least somewhat entertaining to look at,” Watts agreed. “Given that it’s much more difficult for them to up and leave.” Of course, as he said that, the pair of fish darted off behind an artificial reef. “Well,” he amended. “Perhaps not that difficult.”

"Maybe one wanted to sneak a kiss in private," Steven suggested. "Must be hard for them to try doing that during the day. All the tourists about."

“Now that,” Watts said, “is a feeling I can certainly empathize with.”

Present company being an extremely kissable sort of person and all.

"Me too." Steven bumped shoulders with Llewellyn. "Plenty of time for it later."

Or earlier if Llewellyn was feeling bold.

"Not too much later," Watts said firmly. Because see above re extremely kissable.

"We do have those arrangements in ink," Steven said. Though he wondered if Llewellyn would remember that part of their conversation from the bachelor party.

"Why do you think I've left our itinerary open following our tour here?" Watts asked, grinning.

He did, in fact, remember that conversation. All of it.

"Meals, I imagined," Steven said, grinning at him to show he wasn't entirely serious.

"Partially true," Watts had to admit with a laugh.

"Have to keep our strength up, don't we?" Steven said, very deliberately looking innocent. "For tours."

"I can think of a tour or two I'd like to take," Watts affirmed.

"Like the museums," Steven said, because priorities. "Though wouldn't mind walking about with you as well. Doesn't have to be Lisbon. Anytime this week."

"Like the museums," Watts echoed, and Steven's statement did earn him a kiss on the cheek. Without Watts pulling away after a mere fraction of a second, even.

Steven smiled up at him to show how much the kiss was welcome. He didn't kiss back, though, not wanting to push Llewellyn more than he was comfortable with. "Outdoors as well. Nowhere in particular. Taking it all in."

Watts nodded. "Pastéis de nata," he supplied. "Everything I've read says we have to try them."

"Think if we don't try a fair number of desserts Stark'll refuse to be friends with us after," Steven said. Stark would do no such thing of course but Steven did want to report back on if there were things Stark might like to try.

"You are kidding, correct?" Watts had to check. Though Watts considered Stark a friend, Steven was the one who knew him better.

"Joking," Steven reassured him. He gave Llewellyn's hand a squeeze to help. "Though I know he's looking forward to trying things over in France on that trip."

"French pastries are something else," Watts had to agree. Another reason to pencil in a potential Paris trip sometime!

"Well we've Portuguese to try ourselves," Steven said. "We can compare notes with him once we've all gone home."

Strange how "home" meant different things depending on where they were. Normally Steven used it to mean the world they were currently in.

"He and Travis went together," Steven said. "Good step for them, I think."

"First holiday together is an important step," Watts agreed. Even if at least one of them being a school employee simplified the matter since the trip arrangements were all handled on their behalf.

Steven bumped their shoulders again. "It is, isn't it? Hoping you're not tired of me by the end of it."

Not that Steven was worried or anything.

"I could say the same to you of me," Watts pointed out.

"Spoiled, more like," Steven said. "Having you to myself all week."

"Flatterer."

That of course merited a proper kiss. Though a brief one because they were very much in public after all.

It might have been brief but Steven still gave him a kiss back. "Not flattery if it's true, is it? Just you and me and the entire week ahead of us."

Granted the last day was for Annie and Diego's wedding but Steven and Llewellyn were going together so Steven was counting it all the same.

"Selfish, I know, but it's nice to have a little time not to share."

"It's all right to be selfish now and again," Watts said, particularly because he felt the same way. And there was also the Marc of it all, no matter how much he might insist that it was fine, Watts appreciated what he was giving up so that Steven and Watts could have this.

"You're what I most want to be selfish about," Steven told him. "Suppose that works out, at least. Us having this. And you sharing it with me. Portugal, I mean."

"Not exactly how I pictured going, originally," Watts admitted. "But I suppose that just means everything's had a hundred years or so to get more impressively historical. And," he beamed, "I'm here with someone who wants to be here as well." He was well aware Steven had not been possessed of any particular desire to visit the country before he'd suggested it, but he'd said yes and expressed genuine enthusiasm at the idea.

"You could've wanted to go on your own," Steven pointed out. "Half the fuss, planning for one person, isn't it? And it mattered to you. Sometimes sharing what matters doesn't work out. Took a risk there, letting me in on it."

"That I do know. My desire was always to go with- someone I cared about," he admitted, briefly tightening his grip on Steven's hand. "I've travelled plenty on my own. This was an experience I wanted to share." Only the first person he'd suggested it to had essentially laughed it off.

Steven squeezed back. "Lucky me, being someone you care about. I like seeing you be excited about things. And here we are not having done the wine yet."

Steven was very much looking forward to listening to Llewellyn go on about wine.

Much like Watts was eagerly anticipating tomorrow's museum tour for the Egyptian exhibit. Not because of his interest, but because he wanted to hear Steven tell him everything about it.

"It's possible I made sure I had room in my suitcase to bring several bottles back," Watts said shamelessly.

"Have to have souvenirs, don't you?" Steven said, since this sounded perfectly reasonable to him. He'd left space in his luggage to bring things back as well. "Had a thought. Don't take this to mean I think you need to, only wondering if you want to. But did you want to look at clothes as well?"

"I hadn't- considered it," Watts said slowly. "But we've only a couple days in each city. That's hardly enough time to have anything fit properly," he pointed out, unless Steven was referring to the sort of casual lounging-about clothes like the ones he'd purchased for Steven to wear when staying over?

"Was thinking jumpers and the like," Steven said. He moved to stand in front of Llewellyn so they could be eye to eye. "Only if you cared to. I like you and your clothes. You're handsome as you are."

"I don't know that they'd suit me," Watts said, shaking his head a bit at the unintentional pun.

It was Steven so he smiled at the pun, intentional or otherwise. "All right. Only an idea. Nothing I think needs doing."

"If you say," Watts said, though now he was sneaking glances at how other men around them were dressed and, much like in Fandom, very few of them were wearing suits.

"Don't lie to each other, do we?" Steven pointed out. He reached up with both hands to smooth Llewellyn's lapels, even if they didn't need it. "I've always liked you and your clothes."

Watts visibly relaxed at Steven's touch. "I don't know," he teased. "I remember you getting visibly frustrated with one shirt in particular."

That he felt comfortable enough to joke about that experience considering the day after also said a lot.

"Only proves how handsome you are in it," Steven pointed out, grinning at him.

"And here I had the distinct impression you preferred me out of it," Watts said, sotto voce.

Steven leaned closer so he could join Llewellyn in speaking more softly. "Didn't say you weren't handsome that way as well."

"Suppose it's good we've made time for both then, hmm?" Watts asked

"In ink," Steven agreed. And if they were that close anyway he was going to sneak a quick kiss, fast enough that it might've looked like they only bumped into one another.

"Best be careful, though," Watts murmured as he pulled away. "Seems there's gossips about," he said, nodding towards a nearby informational plaque.

Look what you've done, Steven. Your boyfriend was turning into a regular comedian.

Steven took Llewellyn's hand again, giving it a squeeze to show his approval of the joke.

Fortunately the wording on the plague was big enough he didn't need his glasses. "Venomous as well? Hopefully it's not the same for the ones we have at home."

Which to be honest couldn't be ruled out, given the strangeness of Fandom's wildlife.

"I believe the gremlins are the only venomous creatures we need worry about back home," Watts agreed, and now he was doing that, referring to Fandom as 'home'.

"Says they come out at night," Steven said, pointing out that part of the description. "Means they're under my protection. Unless they're hurting other innocent fish. Might be a problem then."

Somewhere Konshu was lamenting yet again that he'd ever been forced to meet Steven.

Yeah, well. Suck it up, Konshu.

"It does say they're hunters," Watts pointed out rather apologetically.

"Maybe they hunt fish being a problem," Steven said. He was fully making things up now for the fun of it, and gave Llewellyn a smile to help make that clear. "Protecting the others that can't protect themselves."

"When they're not gossiping, of course," Watts said, willing to go along with it since it was clear Steven was having a bit of fun.

"Maybe that's what they gossip about," Steven said. He looked around and pointed at a fish at random. "Like that one there never minds where they're going. Could be run over by an eel, they're not careful."

"Tch," Watts clucked his tongue. "And then it jumps in to save the other fish from being run over?" he guessed.

Steven smiled up at Llewellyn as the imagery suddenly felt familiar. "Grabs him by the back of his coat and keeps him close."

Watts felt a blush creeping up on his cheeks at the reminder. "Not sure why I have such difficulty remembering automobiles have the right of way," he mumbled sheepishly.

Because you came from 1909 and settled into a town where there were no automobiles at all, that's why.

"It'll come to you," Steven said. He bumped their shoulders together. "Meanwhile I'll watch out, even if you're traveling by day."

"My Gentleman Knight, as always," Watts told him fondly.

That was absolutely going to make Steven steal another quick kiss. Llewellyn had no one but himself to blame.

Oh no, what a terrible tragic fate he'd sealed for himself. Watts was clearly resigned to it, judging by how enthusiastically he kissed back.

Steven very much enjoyed the enthusiasm, but he wanted to protect Llewellyn. So he pulled back after a moment. "You all right?"

Yes, after a moment. He wanted to protect Llewellyn but Steven was only human after all.

Watts had let himself get lost in the kiss, temporarily forgetting they were in a very public venue. And while no one seemed to be paying them any particular mind, it was hard to say whether that would have remained the case had the kiss gone on any longer. After all, sometimes public disapproval had less to do with the gender of the people involved and more to do with the fact that it was happening at all.

"I'm all right," he confirmed, though he was shifting slightly so he was back to standing beside Steven, so they could continue walking, still hand-in-hand. "Thank you."

Hand in hand and maybe closer than they were when they walked hand in hand a few minutes prior. "Not that I'm complaining, mind you. I like it. But I don't want you doing anything you might regret later. Everything in your own time. It's all right."

"Your continued patience astounds me," Watts told him, shaking his head a little.

"No matter what happens I'm with you," Steven said. "That's the important bit. There's loads of things we can do together. Some wait until we're in private is all."

"I do love you, Steven Grant," because it ought to be said, in response to something like that.

Steven smiled, a pleased blush touching his cheeks. "I love you as well, Llewellyn Watts. That's why being with you is the thing worth doing."

"You are making me wish to kiss you again," Watts said. As if he ever particularly stopped wanting to.

"Only fair," Steven said. "I want to do that with you almost all the time."

Well, now it was Watts who was blushing, the pleased sort rather than the mild embarrassment he'd felt earlier. He was about to say something, when-

"Oh! Are those penguins?" it seemed they'd wandered out of the underwater habitat area and over to one of the terrestrial exhibits.

Again Llewellyn's delight was absolutely charming. "Hopefully they won't mind we're not as dressed up as they are."

"I should think they're accustomed to it," Watts said. "With all the visitors passing through. Resigned, perhaps, that no one is as prepared as they are for a formal event."

His own lack of a proper evening suit had been cause for some minor embarrassment not that long ago, and was on the list of things he hoped to eventually fix, but there was no particular rush. Especially since in Fandom, his own everyday wear was viewed by most as already quite formal.

"It's good manners, isn't it?" Steven said, by way of agreeing with Llewellyn. "Not making other people feel uncomfortable. Even if they're not dressed right. Polite, those penguins."

"Very well-mannered," Watts said with a nod. "Never actually seen any in real life before," he added, as if that hadn't been obvious from his initial reaction. "Only photographs, from the Discovery expedition a few years back. Though those were different penguins than these ones."

"I forget that that was still new for you," Steven said. "Things like traveling to the poles. Not that it's easy these days but it's easier to share what they find once they're there. Internet and the like. Penguins don't have it though. No pockets to store their mobiles, you see."

Steven was still enjoying himself with his stories.

“Well, that’s one advantage my suit’s got, then, despite being less formal, doesn’t it?” Watts asked. “Plenty of pockets.” Good for both mobile telephones and also snacks!

“Sorry fellows,” he said to the penguins. “And ladies,” he added.

"You know some penguins aren't fussed about that?" Steven said. "There's stories of two males like getting together and raising a little one on their own."

Watts nodded. “I’ve- a friend of mine pointed me in the direction of scholarly articles on the topic of homosexuality in the animal kingdom, following my failed attempt at-“ well, Steven knew what he’d been trying to do. No use getting into that.

That Steven might also mean stories as in picture books meant for children hadn’t occurred to him at all.

Steven gave Llewellyn's hand a comforting squeeze. "Could tell you all sorts of things about what it was like in ancient Egypt. Might not have used the words we do today but doesn't mean it didn't happen."

Of course the odds of Steven sharing these stories or anything else on the topic of ancient Egypt, asked for or not, would increase significantly when they were at the museum.

“I’d like to hear about that,” Watts confessed.

Of course, the fact that he’d deliberately sought out a museum with an Egyptian collection meant that any and all such stories were in fact asked for.

"Oh there's loads of things," Steven said. "Gods and humans alike. Which - I guess now that we know the gods are real means some of those stories probably were real. Not symbolic, I mean."

“Tell me one? ~~Entirely handwavily if you’d like~~” Watts asked.

"Did I tell you the story about Horus and Set?" Steven asked.

It said a lot about Steven's distrust of his memory that he had to question if he'd told Llewellyn this story, given that once it was learned it did tend to stick out amongst the others.

Watts shook his head. “You have not,” he confirmed.

"Right," Steven said, immediately warming up to the topic, "one day Osiris's throne is up for someone to take it. We won't get into that bit now, that's its own story. Anyway, two of the other gods want it. Set, Osiris's brother, and Horus, Osiris's son. So they've got to prove which one is worthy, yeah?

"Now in those days two men being together wasn't a problem. Family members doing it among the gods wasn't either. Family tree didn't have many branches there if you follow me. Thing that was the problem was who took a stronger role in the doing it. Especially if you wanted to take over a throne, you see."

Steven looked at Llewellyn to make sure it all made sense so far.

Watts nodded, because yeah, that followed.

It might not soon enough, given the story.

"Set decides he's going to give himself the advantage," Steven continued, still thrilled at the chance to talk about one of his favorite subjects. "He sneaks into Horus's room at night, has a bit of fun. Thinks to himself well that's done it then. Next time everyone's together I can prove it's me who should take over because - er -"

Amazingly Steven stopped being distracted enough to remember there were children around. "Erm. Well he left proof, didn't he? And where it was left, that'd prove which one of them was stronger, right?"

"Nice recovery, there," Watts murmured, tone full of fond amusement.

Steven smiled at the compliment and kept going.

"Now Horus, he says I see what's happening." Steven realized Llewellyn might not get the joke so added, "He's got the head of a hawk. Good vision, yeah? Anyway, he's having none of it. Cleans himself up, chucks all the evidence straight into the Nile.

"Then Horus goes to his mum, Isis, and says what are we going to do about old uncle Set? And Isis, smart lady she is, says what's good for the goose is sauce for the gander, isn't it? Or hawk in this case."

Realizing how that sounded, Steven felt a need to clarify, "Set's not a goose. Noone's rightly sure what he is. Sort of an aardvark giraffe looking thing. Suppose I could ask one of these days."

"Assuming he'd give you a proper answer. Though I suppose Konshu's not the only god you can ask." And the other one he knew actually liked him and all.

"I was thinking Taweret, yeah," Steven agreed. "Right, so Horus - erm - gathers his own proof of leadership. You know. So to speak. But he knows Set's not going to fall for the same trick he played, is he? Horus, being clever, waits until the next time Set's having himself a snack. Now Set loves lettuce - which is more proof of the giraffe idea, come to think of it.

"Anyway, loves it. Like Stark and sweet things. Can't get enough. So Horus takes his, er, evidence and puts it on some salad and offers it up to his uncle, nice as you please. 'Here you go, already got the dressing on it for you' and all that. Set loves lettuce so much doesn't even think twice. Eats it all down, would ask for seconds if he was able."

"The dressing, of course," Watts murmured, though he suspected that particular detail was embellishment provided by the storyteller. "How'd that work out?"

Steven had embellished a tiny bit. In truth lettuce in those days was shaped differently and suffice it to say the juice which came out of the leaves was not clear in appearance. Ahem.

"Well the gods gather, right?" Steven said. "And they say we've got to get this sorted. Osiris isn't coming back from the dead any faster than last time. Someone's got to rule, which of you lot is it?

"Set stands up and says well, I've got proof I'm stronger than Horus. And he does magic, right? To make the proof speak up. Course he's thinking it's going to make noise from inside his nephew, right? But because Horus was smart it doesn't. It pipes up from where Horus tossed it in the Nile.

"So the other gods, hearing that, say to Set why are you wasting our time? Anybody can have a - " again Steven adjusted his wording considering their location " - a, er, go in the Nile. We've all done it. No point bragging about it. Sit back down and stop making a fuss.

"Then it's Horus's turn and he says funny thing about what my old uncle here was trying to prove. And he does the same spell. And because Set ate the evidence sure as anything it pipes up from inside him. So the other gods say well there you are then, Horus was the stronger one, he gets the throne, see you all next time when we've got to argue about this again."

Steven finished up and looked back at the display they were in front of. Reminded of why he'd gone off on this particular tangent, he added, "Oh, and that's how Thoth was born. Set having that inside him. Bang, pregnant, out comes Thoth with two dads, just like those penguins."

"Just like," Watts agreed, eyes twinkling with amusement. "Wild to think of it possibly being true."

"But you see how nice it is, yeah?" Steven said. "Nobody bothered that it was two men or them having a child. It was the fighting over the throne they were fussed about. Not helped by how Set was a bit of a twat. Could give Konshu a run for his money there, I imagine."

"Hmm, you put it like that," Watts said, and he was pulling Steven in for a kiss. Like most of the others today, a quick one, but one nonetheless.

This sort of behavior was only going to encourage Steven to keep telling stories. Hopefully Llewellyn was prepared for what it was going to be like when Steven had actual Egyptian artifacts in front of him for inspiration.

He was working his way up to it! Because yes, the opportunity to listen to Steven tell stories about a subject he was passionate about was something he was absolutely going to make the most of, here. Hence the positive reinforcement.

"For a tale well-told," he said as he pulled away so they could resume looking at the last few habitats.

Steven took Llewellyn's hand again. "There's loads of stories like that with them. Well, that's the only one that involves lettuce. Still, not a boring lot by any means."

"I hope to hear some more of them tomorrow," Watts said with a smile.

"I'm looking forward to the exhibits," Steven said. "I've not seen any of them before. Not in person at least. It's exciting."

"It was a brand-new exhibit when I first entertained the idea of going," Watts told him. "Quite the big deal."

"New to us both then," Steven pointed out. "Bound to have loads of things they've brought in since then. Maybe not things they're meant to have but might as well see them while they're there."

"Precisely," Watts nodded. "And- " oops, there he was getting distracted again, this time by two otters swimming along on their backs and holding hands. Paws. Whatever.

Steven smiled when he saw what Llewellyn was looking at. "Romance is in the air today, looks like."

Watts gave their own joined hands a gentle squeeze. "Looks like," he agreed. These, at least he was more familiar with than the penguins, though they were still terribly fascinating. And adorable.

"Can understand the urge to not want someone you care about to go far," Steven said, squeezing Llewellyn's hand back.

"I am a little prone to wandering, so it's best you hold on tight," Watts said.

Steven smiled up at him. "I'd never want to lose you, Llewellyn Watts."

For all that Watts had asserted he'd come find Steven should he get lost, it was nice to hear the reverse, or some version of it. So another one of those quick kisses was thusly meted out.

"I am getting spoiled at this rate," Steven said. Not that he was complaining.

"You deserve spoiling," Watts asserted.

Steven could only respond to that with a pleased blush and duck of his head. Very pleased, however. It wasn't often he received such compliments.

"And I am going to do my best to make sure that happens," Watts told him. "In all sorts of ways."

"Me as well," Steven said. "For you. As much as I can. You're worth it."

Well now it was Watts's turn to blush furiously at the compliment.

Steven smiled up at him. "I do care for you, Llew. A great deal."

"Well, you did come on this little adventure with me," Watts said. "That means more to me than I can say."

"You shared it with me," Steven said. "That's not nothing."

“And I am ever so glad I did,” Watts said.

Steven indicated their held hands. "Do you think our otter friends are looking at us the same as we're looking at them?"

"Wondering why we're not going for a swim like sensible people?"

Steven laughed, delighted by Llewellyn making a joke as much as the joke itself. "I meant holding hands but I suppose that as well. Maybe when we're at the hotel."

Or there was a large bathtub available.

"I would like to go for a swim with you," Watts mused. He glanced back at the otters as an idea occurred to him.

"Do you think- I've seen- in Miss Gingrich's shop, she has toys that are like teddy bears but not actual bears. Do you think the gift shop here would have something like that? But of an otter?"

"They might," Steven said. "We had things at the museum - er, last museum I worked at, not this one. But stuffed Tawerets and the like. They might have otters here. Why, what are you thinking?"

"For Miss Sherman," he said. "You said you were thinking of getting her something as a thank-you for taking care of your fish."

"Oh!" Steven said as he understood. "Might work. I was thinking of getting something for her daughter anyway. Like she said she didn't need anything but she might not mind a gift for the little one, yeah? Bet a stuffed otter would do a treat."

"That's along the lines of what I was thinking, more or less," Watts confessed. "I know the bears at least are popular as gifts for children back home, they must still be if they're making them for all manner of creatures..." including the entirely imaginary kind he'd seen in Steph's shop.

Steven gave Llewellyn's hand a squeeze. "They are. I bet we'll find one. Probably loads, but I like the otter. It can hold hands with Liz's child."

"Downright adorable," Watts declared. "I'm glad you like the idea."

"I'll be sure to tell her it's from both of us," Steven said.

"You'd do that?" Liz was, after all, Steven's friend, while he and Liz had never really spoken outside of the couple times she'd come in to the Trooper Station visibly distressed.

"It was your idea, wasn't it?" Steven said. "The otter? Can't take all the credit there, can I?"

"Suppose not," Watts said. "It's only that she's your friend, though I suppose I'm on friendly enough terms..." he mused.

"She did say she wanted to try to get to know you better," Steven said. "Especially now she's more herself. And she knows how much you mean to me."

“I think I would like that too,” Watts said. He’d been careful to cultivate a polite distance for, well. Reasons. But now that those reasons weren’t really an issue…

Steven bumped their shoulders together. "I've told her how wonderful you are. Especially this past week, taking care of me."
